Day Fifty-Nine
Contemporary equestrian art, Horse painting, horse art, equine fine art

‘Grey Skye’
Mixed Media on Paper
28 x 20″
Sold
I started this painting during the Open Studios event. But it is really hard to concentrate fully on my painting when people are coming in and out of the studio, asking me questions. So, I put it aside for a couple of days, then returned with fresh eyes. Now I love it. The texture and layers are just what I was trying to do. Definitely one of my favourites.

‘Chestnut Arab Study’

Today’s drawing is of a gorgeous Arab horse that I was commissioned to draw last year. I took so many reference images as he was just fantastic. This was a precious moment of stillness amongst playful bucks and galloping across the field!

This is inspired by my previous horse.
Every spring she would come into season and fancy the most inappropriate horse ( usually inappropriate due to them being at least 4hands higher and gelded!!). Ah, the joys if Spring!
I love this moment when horses meet each other… just before the squealing starts!!

Day Fifty-One

‘Woodland Kalinka’
Charcoal and wash on paper
54 x 73cm
£85I seem to be drawing my old horse quite a lot recently. With all the craziness that is the Open studios preparation it’s nice to get back to basics with charcoal. And Kally has such a beautiful face that she’s always lovely to draw.

Day Fifty
Prussian Hue, mixed media painting of horse

‘Prussian Hue’
Mixed Media on Board
24 x 16″Can’t believe it’s day 50! Half way through and I’ve already learnt so much. As soon as Open Studios is over I’m going to write a wee report about my progress so far.
Open Studios
This weekend is the annual Open Studios Fife event.
There will be 86 artists opening their studios to the public. So if you fancy coming along and seeing where an artist creates, what inspires them and maybe even purchasing a memento or two you can find out all about the artists (including me) here:
During this event there is a small chance that some items that are no longer available will still show as if they are available online. This is because if I sell work from my studio it will take me a short while to update my website. if this happens I will refund your money straightaway. If you are considering a purchase you can always catch me on 07941 276796

Day Forty-Nine
Resting, Acrylic painting of horse, equestrian art

‘Resting’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
10 x 12″
SoldI’ve liked this image for a while. It’s really peaceful.
It’s of the mare I had on loan. Her coat had the most amazing colours in the summer. Lovely wee dapples would show up in the right light and she would just glow.
However, she hated when I stood watching and drawing her and would get very fidgety and make out like the paper was a terrifying monster – so views from behind were the easiest to get!!
I’m not usually big on doing backgrounds in paintings – I prefer to suggest them rather than have them in any detail but I made today’s a little more obvious as I think it all helps the final image.

equestrian art, equine art, equestrian artist, equine artist, uk

‘Every Little Girl Needs A Little Grey Pony’
Mixed Media on Paper
Framed (image to follow)
£60I saw a photo recently of a young girl riding her first pony and it just made me think that most little girls have had a little grey pony at some point.
And then the saying ‘Every pony deserves the love of a girl, every horse the love of a woman’.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com

…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Forty-Four
mixed media painting of horse, equestrian art, heaven is
‘Heaven is…’
14 x 11″ Approx
Mixed Media on Paper
£60I love this pose – when you’re standing beside a horse and seeing what she’s seeing.

…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Forty-Three
Cool As Ice, contemporary equestrian art, equine art, mixed media

‘Cool As Ice’
Mixed Media on Paper
14 x 11″
Sold
Today’s painting is another grey!! There is something about greys that make them brilliant for painting. As with the horse in the painting in my profile banner, this horse really caught my attention at Hopetoun last year. He was huge! But also very striking. While other horses were jogging on the spot waiting for their turn in the showjumping arena this beauty was as cool as ice, observing everything that was going on.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Forty-Two
Shadow Walker, charcoal drawing of horse, equestrian art, equine art.
‘Shadow Walker’
Charcoal
28 x 21″
£120I seem to be drawn to grey’s this week! I really liked how the light cast the shadows of the horse’s plaits and made the plaits themselves glow.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Forty-One
contemporary equestrian artist, equine art uk

‘Follow My Lead’
12 x 10″
Acrylic on Canvas Board
£55
This painting was quite a challenge for me. I don’t often copy the colour of a horse when I’m painting, as I’m usually more attracted to what I think of as the horse’s aura than physical colouring. But for this painting I wanted to stay quite true to life. However, the warm and cool tones seemed to be mixed up, which caused a lot of confusion for me, especially with the grey.

Day Forty
Listening, contemporary equestrian art, horse painting, equine art

‘Listening’
Mixed Media on Paper
16 x 11.5″
£60Okay, I’ve caught up with myself again! Phew. Anyway, day 40!? Where has the time gone?
Today’s painting is of another competitor from last year’s Hopetoun Horse Trials. His beautiful wee ears flicked constantly throughout their dressage test. A gorgeous wee beastie.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Nine
Summertime Blues, Contemporary equestrian art, horse painting
‘Summertime Blues’
Acrylic on Card
15.5 x 12″
£60There is something about the angles in this composition that really appeal to me.
I’ve used this reference image before in another painting. Sometimes a painting will ‘haunt’ me and I’ll try it in a few different images. Some images are too good to only be used once!
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Eight
Vive L'Amour, charcoal drawing of horse, equestrian art, Arab horse

‘Vive L’Amour’
Charcoal
28 x 19″
£140

I had planned to add a wash of colour to this painting, but I felt that the lovely charcoal would be undermimed by the water. That and, I’m a little biased but, this horse doesn’t need much to make her beautiful. I didn’t want to over work the drawing.

The beauty in the painting is the other equine love of my life.
My first horse.

Day Thirty-Seven
Flick, contemporary equestrian art, mixed media painting, horse drawing
‘Flick’
Mixed Media on Paper
16.5 x 10.5″
£60I know I’m running a bit late – but I’ll be back on track tomorrow!
Today’s painting is called ‘Flick’. I was tempted to call her ‘Flicka’ but thought that was too easy. I hope that the title is explained in the loose application of paint and the tension contained in the horse. Let me know what you think!
I love this method of painting – it combines my love for drawing with my love of abstract painting!
Hope you all like it 🙂

Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Six
ShowGirl, equestrian art, horse drawing, graphite horse drawing
‘Showgirl’
Graphite and Wash on Paper
12 x 9″
£40As the title suggests, this was inspired from watching a showing class at Fife Show last year. What a beauty this girl was.
I may do a painting of this image at some point in the future too as the colouring and markings on this girl just don’t show up well in this type of study. At least, not to their full potential. Watch this space….
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Five
Blackened Skye, Hopetoun Horse Trials Dressage Horse, equestrian art
‘Blackened Skye’
Mixed Media on Paper
68 x 48cm
£80
Some days the best intentions just don’t create a masterpiece and rather than digging around in the mud (wet paint) you have to go back to your roots and start again.
Drawing is fundamental to all my art and charcoal is quite possibly my favourite media. It can be so many things – from thick, solid and dominant to gentle, fluid and subtle. Totally underrated stuff!
As for this image, I just love the curve of her neck and the look in her eye. She was in the dressage ring at Hopetoun Horse Trials last year and I couldn’t stop watching her test. Gorgeous!
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Four
April Showers, foal painting, acrylic horse painting, equestrian art uk

‘April Showers’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
8 x 10″
£45

With all these foals appearing everywhere I got broodie! (for foals, not babies!!)

If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Three
Hopetoun's Elixir, graphite drawing, mixed media painting, springer spaniel, Hopetoun Horse Trials
‘Hopetoun’s Elixir’
Mixed Media on Paper
11 x 10″
£45Another graphite/acrylic mix. This is also the first canine of the project and quite experimental. Let me know what you think!
I didn’t want to do a full-on graphite portrait so i did have to hold myself back a bit, but I wanted the paint to add an extra layer of interest and energy to the gorgeous dog!
The dog in the painting was from Hopetoun Town and Country Fair last year (hence the title). A beautiful subject to work from.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Thirty-Two
Highland cow painting, contemporary equine art, bovine art

‘Highland Highlights’
Mixed Media on Paper
12 x 10″
£50Please excuse the not so good photography – it will be professionally photographed this weekend and I will update all the pictures in the series.Anyway, ‘Highland Highlights’… I love highland cows! This lady especially was a fantastic model.
I also really like the way graphite and acrylic compliment each other so well. I’m also keen on leaving parts to the imagination 🙂
Perhaps I should rename this page Lindsay Mathers Bovine Artist 🙂

Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Day Thirty-One
Prose, equestrian art, mixed media painting, equine art

‘Prose’
Mixed Media on Paper
15 x 12″
£50This is a bit of a re-working of an earlier image. I love working with this blue – it’s so intense.
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit http://www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Day Thirty
Soliloquy, equestrian art, horse painting
‘Soliloquy’,
Mixed Media on Paper
26 x 18″
£100
Something a little bit wild and a little bit poetic…
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit http://www.mathersart.blogspot.com

…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Day Twenty-Nine
Keep on Dreaming, grey horse painting, equestrian art
‘Keep on Dreaming’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
12 x 10″
£50
I love painting grey horses – the colours reflected in their coats is amazing. Magical!
If you would like to purchase this painting, or any others in the series, please visit http://www.mathersart.blogspot.com
Thank you.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Twenty-Eight
100 paintings in 100 days, equestrian art, horse in art

 ‘Prussian Study’
Mixed Media on Paper
12 x 10″
SoldIn this painting I wanted to combine the detailed graphite work of a traditional portrait with loose, expressive application of paint. The paint is subtle, but adds interest and another layer to the narrative. I’m really working on developing this style in my other work and wanted to try it for the 100 days project. For this project, I had to keep it quite small as the graphite work takes quite a while (hence the early morning posting!)
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Day Twenty-Seven
watercolour painting of foal, equine art, 100 paintings
‘Foal Study’
Pen and watercolour in sketchbook!Today was a day for being outside and so i decided to work outdoors. ‘Foal Study’ is one of about a hundred sketches made in my sketch book. It was a little too late for me to paint a ‘proper’ painting so I chose one of my sketches. Please excuse the scribbled notes, they aren’t meant to be literal, they are notes to help me with future paintings. I.e. ‘big eyes’ is a reference to the fact that I have enlarged the eyes, and ‘I like this foal’ was about the technique and colours more than the foal’s character! However, just to be clear – I do like the foal in real life!!
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Day Twenty-Six
Something in the way, acrylic horse painting, equestrian art
‘Something in the Way’
Acrylic
12 x 10″
£60
Today’s painting….. has no real back ground story, other than the subject is a horse I’ve been inspired to paint so many times, I hope it’s not getting old!
I liked the way she appears out of the darkness, there’s something magical about this horse.

Day Twenty-Five
Black Chandelier, charcoal horse drawing, equestrian art
‘Black Chandelier’
Charcoal
22 x 15″
£70
Not exactly a painting but I do use brushes when drawing with charcoal…
Sometimes I need to let loose, and charcoal is a most excellent media to work with at these times.
I love the freedom that comes with using charcoal. So expressive.
In my work, I want my images to come alive. I need them to have energy and a soul of their own.

Day Twenty Four
Tones of Home, lindsay Mathers Equestrian art, contemporary equestrian art

‘Tones of Home’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
10 x 8″
£50
I had a lot of nervous energy today and needed to be really bold with applying the paint (and I was listening to Biffy Clyro) so today’s painting is quite simplified and confident.

Please forgive the rather sporadic posting recently, we have been having a lot of issues with our broadband and phone line – the joys of living on a farm in the middle of nowhere!

 Day Twenty-Three
mixed media painting of horse, contemporary equestrian art, gray horse
‘Fire and Ice’
Mixed Media on Panel
61 x 20 cm
£85
This is a painting of one of the most beautiful horses I’ve ever met. She was such an old girl, with her mane way below her neck. But her eyes were so bright and attentive. The sort of horse that little girls dream of!She had been with her owner forever and the two of them were growing old together.
It was so lovely to see them together, what a bond they have.

dressage horse painting, equestrian artist, equestrian art, dressage

‘Prussian Blue’
Mixed Media
55 x 37 cm
£95

You may recognise this image i also used it for day one! This time I’ve been a bit freer in my application. I aimed to have the loose drawing convey the energy contained in the dressage horse.

 Day Twenty
contemporary equestrian art, mixed media painting, Stingin' Belle

‘Stingin’ Belle’
Mixed media
54 x 35cm
£95
Sold
I love the composition of this. I’m currently working on a painting of this same image (in full colour) which I’ll have ready for the Open Studios in May.
I really enjoy this way of working – loud music is a must (it helps me channel energy, or at least that’s my excuse to Roger!).
The title is from a song by the band I was listening to as I created this piece.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Day Nineteen
Highland cow mixed media painting, contemporary art
‘What?!’
Mixed media on paper
35 x 50 cm
£55
This is a Highland cw from last year’s Fife Show. I love the way the highland cows can just stare at you as if they are saying ‘What?!’. They must be fed up of everyone photographing them!
Anyway, this image really appealed to me. I am actually using the same image for a commission but I couldn’t resist ‘punking’ her up a wee bit in mixed media.

Day Eighteen
Painting of Clydesdale, contemporary equestrian art, Blair Atholl international horse trials.

‘Gentleman Jim’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
25.5 x 20.5 cm
£45
This painting is of a beautiful Clydesdale who was in the Ridden Clydesdale Classes at Blair Castle International Horse Trials and Country Fair. I was awed by the gentleness emanating from these huge animals. Especially after they did their lap of honour around the ring. The ground shook that day!! Gorgeous beasties 🙂 x

This painting was inspired by the spring’s …. interesting weather! It has been very uncomfortable to sit outdoors drawing the horses so far this year, what with all the blizzards! However, I wanted to capture the fleeting vision of a horse as they disappear back into the snow.

Day Sixteen

‘Untitled (at the moment! Your Ideas Needed)’
Acrylic on Canvas Board
8 x 10”
£60

Okay, this painting comes with a long story! I’m already in foods of tears and I haven’t even written it yet, please be warned…

When I was a young girl my friends and I used to ‘help out’ (get in the way of the staff) at a local riding school.
One day the most stunning, elegant, wild, incredible horse (pony!) arrived. I instantly fell in love with her. I named her Shandy and my dad carved a beautiful plaque for her stable door.

I spent hours grooming her and just doing anything to be around her. She was such a character and so full of life. She was due to be broken in and I loved watching her trainer work with her. One day I was asked if I would like to ride her!!
I would be only the second person in the world to ride this magnificent creature. I felt so honoured. I actually still remember that ride, even the moment when she spooked when dirt hit off the indoor school wall.

One day I arrived at the yard to find out that she had been sold! I was devastated. My heart was broken.
I didn’t know the next part of her story because my friends thought it would be better if I didn’t. I eventually found out sometime later.
On the way to her new home in the lorry Shandy had become frightened and tried to escape. She attempted to jump the partition in the lorry. She was injured so badly that she had to be put down instantly.

20 years on and I am still absolutely devastated. Shandy was everything a young girl could dream of. She was my perfect horse.

And so, on to the painting – this is how I image her now. Running free and still so full of life. But I can’t find the right title for the painting to reflect all of this….. I would love to hear your ideas for a title.

Thank you for sticking with this until the end!

Day Fourteen

Equestrian Fine art, Euestrian artist, horse painting
‘Snow Drops’
Acrylic on Board
24 x 18cm
£45
This painting is a much calmer version of Friday’s ‘Something Wild’. I often take photographs and sketches and then work on them back in my studio and depending on what mood I am in, and therefore what music I am listening to, the end results can be enormously different.
I am feeling very calm today!

Day Thirteen

Freestyle graphite painting, dressage painting horse, drawing
‘Freestyle’
Graphite and wash on canvas board
25.5 x 30.5 cm
£45
I love the simplicity of this painting… can I call it a painting? I did use brushes to apply the graphite powder and water!
The painting is quite simple as I wanted to concentrate on how the light touches the horse, emphasizing the muscles. The simplicity allows the movement in the image to come to the fore.

Day Twelve

Something Wild, acrylic equestrian art, contemporary horse art

‘Something Wild’

Acrylic on Paper
55 x 37 cm
£85
As the title suggests, I needed to let loose a little!  I’ve been working on quite a few commissions lately and for that I need to concentrate and be very careful. So there’s nothing quite like a loose, wild painting to relax.

Day Eleven

Midnight Sonata, acrylic painting of horse, contemporary equestrian art
‘Midnight Sonata’,
acrylic on canvas board,
18 x 24 cm,
£45
In this painting I wanted to show how the moonlight highlights the horse. I loved the blue tones and the light from a bulb close by added a yellow tone too, which stood out from the moonlight.
Also, the rain had caused the mane to curl into ringlets which emphasised the strands.

Day Ten

equestrian drawing, charcoal wash,
‘Field Study’ (less is more)
 Charcoal and wash on paper
21 x 30 cm
£30
Sometimes, I can over work a painting. When this happens I have to go back to the drawing board (or field!!) and de-stress. Today was one of those days.
I work better when I am relaxed, with loose limbs and free flowing marks. That and drawing is very therapeutic.
So the above image is very basic, but a sensitive study of a mischievous pony, on a very cold and windy day!

Day Four

Acrylic painting highland cow calf, cow art‘Butter Cup’

Acrylic on Canvas Board
24 x 18cm
£55
Let me introduce you to Butter Cup. She’s a little bit punky. This is in part due to my little kitty managing to get into my studio, sit on my palette, then run around like her tail was on fire covering the whole room in lovely, luscious ultramarine paint! After this little episode, I decided ‘Butter Cup’ would look good in a little crazy colour.
What do you think?

100 Paintings in 100 Days – new project starts tomorrow!

Every day for the next 100 days (oh my goodness, what am I getting myself in to!?) i undertake to complete a painting. The purpose of this project is to drive my self insane. Well, no, that’s nnet true. But it may well be a side affect.

Many of my artist friends have recommended doing this project and after completing a similar, but much smaller, project in 2011 I decided the time was right.

I’ll update this site everyday with the latest painting, along with my blog www.mathersart.blogspot.com. You can also follow my progress on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MathersArt

Feel free to let me know what you think of my progress.
